Module 5: Above & Beyond: Every Interaction Matters

Going above and beyond doesn't mean doing more; it means doing what matters. It's about treating every interaction as an opportunity to uplift, connect, and serve with heart.

Why It Matters

People remember how you made them feel. Whether it's a brief conversation or a long term relationship, the way you show up can leave a lasting impact.

A Story of Going Above & Beyond

I once received a call from a celebrity needing help with their phone service. After resolving the issue, they offered to buy me any piece of jewelry I wanted and have it sent directly to me. I politely declined, saying it was a privilege to help them.

They asked, "Do you know who you're speaking with? I can afford anything you choose." I replied, "I do know who I'm speaking with. You already give me and the world a gift. I get to watch your talent on television almost nightly."

They insisted, "I can have it sent to your home. Nobody would need to know." I smiled and said, "They may not know. But, I would. I'd feel awful for making you feel like I needed anything other than the gift you already give."

They finally accepted that I was simply happy to provide the best service I could.

A few weeks later, after returning from an illness, I was asked to place a call on hold. My new Supervisor and Area Manager were standing at my desk. Head office had contacted the call center. They presented me with a company watch for going above and beyond.

That moment reminded me: true service isn't about what you receive. It's about what you give and how you give it.

A Story of Humor, Grace, and Going Beyond

There was a time when my sense of humor nearly cost me my job. A new manager, unfamiliar with me or my work ethic, reacted to something a staff member told him; without knowing the full story or who I was.

Thankfully, my Department Manager stood beside me. They knew my character, my consistency, and my commitment. Within two weeks, that same new manager had me working for him; cleaning his family home every second week.

When he later moved to another location for a better position, he told me personally, "If you ever relocate out there, I will have a position waiting for you."

That experience taught me that reputation matters. Humor can be misunderstood, but integrity speaks louder. And sometimes, going above and beyond means staying true to yourself, even when others haven't seen your full story yet.

A Story of Quiet Integrity

I retired earlier than planned from my last job. When my manager called me in to ask why, I simply said, "I can no longer provide the quality of service I expect of myself."

She responded, "Your service is still always above and beyond." I thanked her, while restating that I couldn't meet the standard I held for myself.

The truth was, my new supervisor had become a bully. And I didn't want to add more stress to an excellent manager who had just been handed an overwhelming workload. She never said anything; but, I've always been observant.

Sometimes, going above and beyond means stepping away with grace. It means protecting your values, honoring others quietly, and choosing dignity over discomfort.

Reflection Exercise

Think of a time when someone went above and beyond for you. What did they do? How did it make you feel?

Closing Message

Every interaction is a chance to make a difference. Whether you're helping someone solve a problem, offering a listening ear, or simply being kind, your presence matters.

Going above and beyond isn't about perfection. It's about intention. It's about choosing to care, even when no one is watching. And when you do, you create ripples that reach far beyond the moment.
